It is one of the most infamous locations in the world. Planes, ships and countless people have gone missing there.
The Bermuda Triangle also known as the Devil’s Triangle. The mystery is an urban legend and often considered a paranormal place. The Bahamas lie within the region; all other waters not part of the claimed Bahamas maritime zone are international waters.
The first story of mysterious disappearances in the triangle was published in an article by Associated Press on 16th September, 1950. It was the first time someone publicly suggested something unusual was going on there. In 1952 ‘Fate’ magazine published an article about the loss of planes and ships in the Triangle.
Gulf Stream is the name of the current that flows through the Triangle. This current flows at a surface velocity of 5.6 miles per hour. It can transport small boats that land on the water, and can throw boats off track. It is also called a ‘river within an ocean’.
Methane gas has been thought to cause the ships to sink in the Triangle by decreasing the water’s buoyancy. Methane hydrates under the continental shelf of the Triangle, and Methane coming out of the shelf would cause the ships to sink very quickly. The Methane theory, however, cannot explain lost planes.
A strange feature glowing ‘white water’ picked up by the satellites still remains a mystery to the scientists. Interestingly this phenomenon was first recorded by Christopher Columbus as he sailed through the area centuries beforehand. Another mysterious meterological condition renowned in Bermuda Triangle is a glowing ‘green fog’ which obscures the vision of sailors and pilots as they try to navigate.
There are other locations on earth which appear to have similar properties: magnetic disturbances, missing aircrafts, crewless ghost ships and malfunctioning compasses. The most famous of these is probably the Dragon’s Triangle in Japan, which uncannily lies at the exact opposite position on the globe to the Bermuda Triangle.
Many theorise that the Triangle is home to the lost city of Atlantis. According to the legend and speculation, the city of Atlantis relied on power of special energy crystals that were extremely powerful. These energy crystals are in altered state of some kind and send out rays of energy that confuse navigation.
It’s one of the deepest spots on Earth. Some of the deepest trenches in the world are found in this area. Ships and planes that sink into these deep trenches will probably never be found.
William Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, written in 1610–11, was believed by scholars to be based on a real-life Bermuda shipwreck.
The disappearance of the ship USS Cyclops in March 1918 is deemed to be the single largest loss of life in history of US Navy not related to combat. This ship had over 300 men and 10,000 tons of manganese on board. It never sent out a SOS distress call despite being equipped to do so.
